IndieGames.com Podcast #1: Stephen Lavelle
September 20, 2010 12:21 PM | Michael Rose
[Update: The IndieGames podcast is now available on iTunes, and can be found here.]
It's finally here! Myself and Tim have been pondering over whether to start an IndieGames podcast for a while now, and this weekend we set it all in motion. The IndieGames.com Podcast #1 is now available to listen to online or download if you'd prefer, and can be found just below the cut. Alternatively, you can subscribe to the podcast RSS feed here.
First off, I should explain the set-up: each week, we'll have a guest indie developer hosting the podcast, with Tim and I then getting involved in each topic. When we were discussing how the podcast should be set out, we wanted it to be a little different from your normal listening material, and the 'different indie developer hosting each week' idea was a neat little twist that we decided to go for. Hopefully you guys will agree!
Everything we discussed in the podcast is linked to in this post (again, below the cut). So if you'd like to check out more details on anything we talked about, it's all laid out nice and simple just below. As it's the first podcast, we want to hear from you lot about what we can do to make it better! The plan is to be a bit experimental with features and ideas each week, until we find exactly the kind of show we (and you) are comfortable with. With that all said, take a listen and enjoy!

Sweet! Finally a podcast on the indie gaming scene! Will give it a listen later. Cheers!

Nice idea. Will the podcast be available on iTunes? If not please make it so
hydroxy | September 20, 2010 2:30 PM
Yes, it takes a couple of days to add a new podcast to iTunes, so it should be appearing sometime today or tomorrow.
M Rose | September 20, 2010 2:31 PM
Hey yo! You got the wrong link to me at the end of this text... www.souleye.se is my site! The .net one is some other dude! :)
Anyway... There you can get the song that the intro is based on in lovely full stereo 128kbps, instead of 64kbit mono (it makes a HUGE difference, 64kbit is meant only for talking in my opinion).

Cool.
There seemed to be a bunch of generic gaming news near the start - it wasn't interesting so I stopped paying attention - so that seemed a bit unnecessary. I enjoyed when discussions got going. Deep discussions of games all the participants have played would be cool - maybe arrange beforehand to play a few new things to discuss, rather than mentioning games not everyone in the conversation has played?
(And thanks Stephen for the KPSJ mention!)

funny, and inspiring. nice work dudes :D
nyarla | September 20, 2010 4:30 PM
Sorry about that SoulEye, I've no idea how I managed that!
@brog: You're definitely right, the news section is something we need to work on. We were toying with the ideas of doing more of a 'news blast' style thing, where we quickly run through all the big headlines rather than lingering on them, then pick out particular interesting points here and there.
M Rose | September 20, 2010 4:34 PM
Nice work! I think the concept works really well and I'm already looking forward to the next episode!

Hahahaha YOU LOVE ME YOU REALLY REALLY LOVE ME
I am so ashamed of my burning need for acceptance.
Andy Schatz | September 20, 2010 6:40 PM
You almost lost me when you were just running through the lists of games for the various events, but once it became more more of an interview of Stephen it became very interesting!
ExciteMike | September 20, 2010 6:44 PM
OK, so it seems like next week, we need to cut the news down a little bit, keep the dev questions, and maybe throw in a special feature or talking point.
M Rose | September 20, 2010 7:13 PM
I actually liked all of it, apart from the bit where Stephen was being a lying asshole poop-head, but otherwise cool :)
quite like to have a 'discussion/talk' section maybe, where you all talk about a specific topic or something, most of the talking here felt like it was just adressing stuff running down a list and there was no real depth to it? I guess? maybe?
also I cant be fooled, I know Stephen looks after his hair using some super-natural means!
Sophie Houlden | September 20, 2010 8:42 PM
Thanks for making that! Very interesting to listen to :) I agree with what everyone above has said, but I really found the interview very interesting to listen to.
Also I didn't know about Indie Games Arcade before so that was useful for me to hear!

Steph Thirion also made "Eliss" one of the better iPhone games, you can find out more on her website:

chuan_: He did indeed - also, Steph is a guy, not a girl :D
M Rose | September 21, 2010 4:50 PM
^ sorry, his website.!
chuan_l | September 21, 2010 4:55 PM
Thank you for the podcast, I found it through a re-tweet by xNotch, the person behind Minecraft. I found it quite enjoyable to listen to and look forward to my itunes subscription informing me of future podcasts.
CanadianWolverine | September 24, 2010 7:38 PM
Oh and I really liked the mention of the Zombies vs Humans tag game or whatever it is, I need to go google that now and find out what that is about since I didn't notice a link in the description of the podcast.
CanadianWolverine | September 24, 2010 7:40 PM
what is sophie h going on about?
Anonymous | September 25, 2010 3:09 PM
What is the game in the background of the Buzzsprout page? Looks interesting.
Darkmire | September 27, 2010 3:45 PM
@Darkmire: It's called Journey to the Center of the Earth: http://www.indiegames.com/blog/2009/09/freeware_game_pick_journey_to.html
M Rose | September 27, 2010 3:49 PM
A: hey, i listened to that podcast you hosted,
B: ah, yes.
A: honestly it was pretty boring! because it was mostly news stuff
B: There were, at the very least, problems with the formatting
A: but it was fun to hear you guys talk
A: yeah, well, it was the first and all
A: also the interview was really lame
B: Reasons being
A: well, in my mind, good interviews are conversations rather than bullet point lists
this one was the latter
B: yeah
A: but yeah, it was only the first, things can only go up from here
