Music: Super Meat Boy! Soundtrack (Danny B.)

Hot on the heels of the Super Meat Boy podcast installment featuring game designers Edmund and Tommy, this morning we're catching up with musician Danny Baranowsky.

Today marks the release of the 97-minute album Super Meat Boy! Soundtrack via digital download on Bandcamp, while a special edition on compact disc is due out in late November. The composer of the Xbox Live Arcade title, headed for PC and WiiWare, discusses the critical response to Team Meat's first foray into console gaming. The soundtrack for the 2D sidescrolling puzzle game began as background music for the Meat Boy Flash game on Newgrounds, followed by a year-long process of arrangement and additional music composition.

Danny B. began his career as a musician posting arrangements of classic console themes to the online community OverClocked ReMix. He went on to score Canabalt and Gravity Hook, two popular Flash titles by independent designer Adam Atomic. When Alec Holowka's soundtrack album to the IGF grand prize winner Aquaria surfaced, Danny B. both did the mastering and arranged the mini-boss theme. With Super Meat Boy he has emerged as an up-and-coming console game composer, nominated earlier this year for the Independent Games Festival's Excellence in Audio award. Three of his tracks from the indie game will be making their way as playable downloadable content to Rock Band 3 this January.

How much of the game were you able to playtest prior to the launch on XBLA?

Danny B.: There's a lot of music in Super Meat Boy that I never got to hear in-game, together with gameplay until it was out. I had beta builds for the first few chapters.

Was there anything that took you by surprise?

There were a couple glitches, but they will be resolved really soon. The chapter five hard music wasn't correct, and another track had been completely omitted. The first patch is going to fix that.

Clearly one advantage that you have over game composers of previous console eras is that problems like these can be solved through a patch. You don't have to demand a recall of thousands of cartridges to get that overlooked music theme back in the game.

Yeah, it's kind of cool too that with the patch I can say, "Here, have a new music track!" Apart from a few minor bugs, the game is crazy impressive, especially given that it's just two people designing and coding it.

Having only received a partial build before, you must be seeing a lot of things in the game for the first time.

I was the first person to 100% it. I was also accused of cheating. (laughs)

Browser Game Pick: Action Escape Kitty (Melly)

Action Escape Kitty is a tough side-scrolling shmup. There is no end to the game - rather, you keep on blasting and surviving for as long as possible.

C shoots, and X deploys a special blast that turns all the bullets on screen into score. From what I can tell, the different formations of enemies appear in a random order, so no two playthroughs are the same. Not that I can last very long, anyway - even with five lives, I can't do much more than a minute!

Browser Game Pick: GunBlood (Andrew Wolf)

GunBlood is a simple Western draw 'n' shoot style game that doesn't mind splattering a bit of blood around. Over 9 rounds against increasingly difficult opponents, the idea is to hold your mouse pointer over the barrel of the gun for 3 seconds, then let loose on your enemy.

It's pretty mindless and there's not exactly much skill involved past 'aim for the head', but it's also a lot of fun. Special bonus rounds appear every few rounds, giving you the opporunity to shoot plates, bottles and birds.

Definitely worth giving a few minutes of your time to. Play over at Office Game Spot. [Source]

Nimbus Released on Steam

Well here's a pleasant surprise - remember that awesome trailer we showed you a week ago? The video for Nimbus merely stated 'soon available', but a week later and up it pops on Steam!

Nimbus is a puzzle racer with over 50 levels to play through and many tight spaces to navigate. Your craft has no means of propelling itself, hence it must use the surrounding level to gain boosts and reach the goal. It's one of those 'easy to get into, hard to master' setups, with stupidly difficult levels by the time you reach the end.

I've been playing it all morning, and can testify that the $9.99/£5.99 price tag is well worth it - it's all very lovely stuff. There doesn't appear to be a demo at the moment, but if you want to go for it anyway, grab a copy from Steam.

Trailer: The Real Texas (Calvin French)

The Real Texas is an upcoming top-down adventure game in the style of the classic Zelda games, where you play as a rancher who discovers an alternate world during one of his holiday trips to England. A project that has been in development for more than three years, The Real Texas should have plenty of items and treasures to collect, houses to loot, enemies to kill, and the occasional side quest or two that you can partake in if you're up for it.

The game is set to be released early next year for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Trailer: Dyad (Shawn McGrath, Pekko Koskinen)

Dyad is an IGF-entered tunnel shooter that's scheduled for release sometime in 2011 (probably for the PC and perhaps the Xbox 360), where the player's objective is to try to get to the end of a track as quickly as possible by manipulating other vessels on the track.

The game was premiered at Toronto's Hand Eye Society in November 2009, and " from Pekko Koskinen, designer of IGF award winning games Dragonfly Variations and Spawns of Deflebub, and Shawn McGrath, creator of Chain3 for iPhone, as well as ToJam favourites Xiq and A Game About Bouncing." [UPDATE: Jason '6955' DeGroot is providing music for the title.]

There's not a lot of information about the game besides what's provided on the IGF page, but do keep an eye on Shawn's site and Dyad's official page for future updates on this upcoming hybrid racer.

Freeware Game Pick: BrainSplode (Richard Edwards)

BrainSplode! (or Rocket Game!) is a physics-based puzzle game which puts you in control of a rocket launcher that can be used to fire missiles at pink-coloured brains. The objective here is to destroy all of the brains in the area (marked as green squares on the mini-map) so that you may progress to the next stage, where more brains await for their eventual annihilation at your hands.

You can use the marker in the red box to move the turret around, then click on the launch button to fire a missile. Projectiles bounce off yellow pads, and players can utilize rocket components like thrusters and parachutes to guide their missiles with more precision in later stages.

The game is still currently in development, but an alpha build is already available to download and try out if you don't mind having only six stages to play with. (Windows, 3.86MB)

Trailer: Seasons After Fall (Swing Swing Submarine)

I've been watching out for Seasons After Fall (originally called Seasons) for a while now, and I'm glad I did - check out this lovely trailer!

You play a fox who has the power to change the seasons - this allows him to solve puzzles by freezing lakes and growing trees. There are some really great ideas on display here, and we're also promised that later in the game it will all get a little darker and just that bit evil. Bring it on, me sez!

Seasons After Fall has been entered into this year's IGF, and will be available for Windows, Mac and Linux in 2011.

Guess the Secret Super Meat Boy Characters, Win the PC Edition

[A couple of the characters have now been announced and feature just below the cut - but there are still more to find, so keep guessing!]

Hey, did you notice that we like Super Meat Boy quite a lot here at IndieGames? Of course you did, we haven't shut up about it in a while. Allow us to share our love with you in the form of prizes! Everyone loves prizes!

Each version of Super Meat Boy features exclusive playable characters, not found in the other versions. With the PC and WiiWare editions of the game still on the horizon (aka released in the next couple of months), the unique characters for the PC version are yet to be announced. We already know the Minecraft guy is going to be one of them, and also Viridian from VVVVVV and Josef from Machinarium - but that leaves four more slots available for iconic indie characters to fill.

So here's the deal - have a think about who you believe will be the other three unique characters for the PC edition of Super Meat Boy, and then leave one character name in the comments section below. After the actual three are officially announced by Team Meat, we'll randomly select three people who answered correctly to win copies of the PC version of the game.

A couple of quick rules: Make sure you leave your email address so we can get back to you if you're a winner (don't worry, your email address will not be shown publicly). Also, only one entry per email address - entering multiple times with the same address will get you disqualified, young man/lady!
