[Guest reviewer Colin Brown profiles each game in the Gone Fishin' Bundle, now available at IndieGames' co-created site: Indie Royale.]

SQUIDS is a game that was originally launched and polished on iOS devices, before the Game Bakers eventually ported it over to PC and Mac, thereby opening the door for a bundle appearance. As someone who skips the vast majority of smart phone games, I'm very glad they did this, because SQUIDS is a seriously well polished and incredibly fun title. I feel like casual games wouldn't get such a bad rap if every game was this polished and engaging.

The reason that SQUIDS manages to be such a delight is the way it gets casual gameplay right. SQUIDS takes the basic "flinging cute animals with physics" gameplay that makes up so many iOS games and actually builds a solid game around it, not just a premise. Each battle revolves around flinging your four squids at the enemies, doing damage and knocking them into obstacles and pits. Your squids can only be flung until they run out of stamina, so it becomes your job to maximize the damage they do and ground they cover using smart moves.

This all sounds well and good, but it's the RPG elements that really make the game for me. Each of your squids belongs to a particular class, granting extra abilities and stats. For example, a shooter squid can make one long ranged attack per round, while a healer squid can restore the hit points of any ally it runs into. You can customize your squad with different turn orders and class loadouts, and spend pearls to upgrade and equip the squids with better stats and lovely hats. It's a fairly simple and cursory RPG framework, but it does wonders for the game.

I haven't even touched on the lovely painted art design, the nicely handled high resolution support and the rather stunning acoustic soundtrack. Suffice to say, SQUIDS is quite an impressive little tactical adventure that certainly stirred my jaded little heart. This Indie Royale has been rather good all around, but SQUIDS is definitely a highlight you shouldn't miss.
