Microsoft charts the biggest-selling and most-played Xbox 360 games of 2012 in this year-end roundup, revealing that DigitalDNA Games' Minecraft-like survival horror game CastleMiner Z is last year's overall highest-selling title for the Xbox Live Indie Games service.

Minecraft-inspired efforts continue to drive sales for the platform. Nine of XBLIG's twenty biggest-selling games for 2012 present some sort of variation on the Minecraft formula, and four of the service's top five overall sellers -- CastleMiner Z, its predecessor title CastleMiner, Total Miner: Forge, and FortressCraft Chapter 1 -- take obvious inspiration from Mojang's breakthrough hit.

Other popular Xbox Live Indie Games featured in Microsoft's year-end chart include Sick Kreation's online multiplayer FPS End Of Days: Infected vs Mercs, Raoghard's Trials-like racer Toy Stunt Bike 2, and cupholder's romance-themed visual novel Don't Die Dateless, Dummy!

Overall, there's less variety among 2012's biggest-selling XBLIG titles, compared to 2011's results. Only four Minecraft clones were featured in the previous year's list, for instance, leaving room for unconventional genres like lacrosse sims and voice-changing software. To its credit, though, 2012's list includes significantly fewer zombie games.
