[by Leigh Alexander]

The personal games movement is providing an important, exciting new avenue for expression and a new understanding of design, many believe. At the Different Games conference in New York this weekend, four panelists presented on the theme of personal game-making and why it matters to them.

XBLIG Pick - Magnetic By Nature: Awakening draws you in

April 30, 2013 7:40 PM | Anthony Swinnich

Magnetism is a cruelly underused game mechanic. There's something inherently cool about the ability to attract and repel objects, or walk along the ceiling a la The Legend of Zelda. These properties have been applied to every level in the remarkable Magnetic By Nature: Awakening.

Browser Pick: repair the torn fabric of reality but Please Ignore The Dancing Llama

April 30, 2013 3:55 PM | Paul Hack

llama1.pngZayne Black of Games by Zed (AKA DedHedZed), developer of Flibble, knows a thing or two about the effective use of minimalism. Minimalism was the theme of Ludum Dare 26, so his 48 hour competition entry Please Ignore The Dancing Llama ticks all the right boxes and is one of the most complete and satisfying experiences of the many LD26 games I've played so far.

Kickstarter: Stonehearth, gorgeous sandbox strategy that also appeals to D&D fans

April 30, 2013 12:52 PM | John Polson

Tom Cannon, EVO fighting game tournament co-founder, emailed us to talk about his and his brother's passion project, which turns out is not a fighting game. Instead Stonehearth on Kickstarter is a combination of their love of complex simulations with the 16-bit feel of RPGs, wrapped in a sandbox strategy game with town building, crafting, and battles. The game initially will ship on Windows around September 2014, and is available at the $15 tier.

Game Dev Tycoon fights piracy with piracy

April 30, 2013 9:00 AM | Staff

Game-Dev-Tycoon-tile-wide-150x150.pngCounter-piracy measures can be a bone of contention among developers and publishers big and small. But indie studio Greenheart Games has come up with an inspired solution to bite back at pirates.

When Greenheart Games discovered that more than 90% of its players for its game development sim, Game Dev Tycoon, came by the title illegally, Greenheart responded by seeding its own cracked copy, with a not-so-subtle modification to its code.

"Initially we thought about telling them their copy is an illegal copy," Greenheart's Patrick Klug says. "But instead we didn't want to pass up the unique opportunity of holding a mirror in front of them and showing them what piracy can do to game developers."

Indie Tools: CraftStudio

April 30, 2013 5:10 AM | Konstantinos Dimopoulos / Gnome

With the full beta release of CraftStudio and its hefty new free version, there's absolutely no reason not to try the thing out and be impressed at what an excellently made offering it is. Even if you've never really considered making games that is, as CraftStudio does feel and work quite a bit like a game-making game. A more developer focused version of Minecraft if you will, though this an analogy that obscures the fact that this an actually powerful, unexpectedly versatile and utterly unique tool. Really, just have a look at the games it has already helped spawn.

Browser Pick: control time and gravity while busting up drug gangs in Quantum Corps

April 29, 2013 9:05 PM | Paul Hack

quantumcorps.pngIn the Detroit of the far future (2002 to be precise), gangs of illegal substance manufacturers have taken over the city. The police have assembled an elite unit of gangbusters to raid the drug factories and restore order in the streets: The Quantum Corps. As a member of this special squad, your weapons in the war against crime are time manipulation, gravity control, and a big gun.

Hurdle Turtle 2 running toward XBLIG, jumps from infinity to multiple levels

April 29, 2013 5:55 PM | Anthony Swinnich

hurdleturtle2_42913.pngHolmade Games considers the original Hurdle Turtle on XBLIG their most beloved game to date, so it's not surprising to see them return to the track with Hurdle Turtle 2. Don't expect a simple second lap, however, as there are big changes in store for our shell-backed friend.
