Hide and Seek by Feili Chen of Brume Studio (Sela the Space Pirate) is my pick for the scariest game in the 7DFPS jam this year. Despite some rough edges, its nightmarish imagery and the powerlessness of the player character combine for a memorable horror experience. You're being hunted by a murderer with a giant mutated hand and a blood-stained grin. You're also haunted by hallucinations that'll turn real enough to take your life just as effectively as your stalker.
It all starts when you come across the killer mumbling over his handiwork in a room of what could be your house (or just some kind of symbolic mental construct). Guess who's next on his list? Your first action in the game is to turn around and hightail it out of there. But don't worry, the Goat Man is right down the hall and ready to make a pact with you! If you bring him 10 items that were precious to you in your childhood, he will dispose of your pursuer. Well, it's an offer you can't really refuse...
So you have to make your way through the house, searching for these objects and avoiding the killer. Move with WASD and look with the mouse, hold Shift to run, and hit Ctrl to toggle crouch. Right-click to interact (open a drawer, hide under a bed, take an item, etc.) and left-click to blink your eyes. This last action is important; it's the only way to make the insanity-inducing hallucinations go away. They usually make an appearance right after you pick up a key item, generally accompanied by ominous black smoke, and you can't hide from them. The killer, on the other hand, is not a hallucination and cannot be blinked away. But you can use a number of places in the house to hide from him, and you can always run for your life if you see him coming.
After you meet your doom, whether by monster or madness, you'll find yourself in a smoky room. Simply exit it to start again in the Goat Man's sanctuary, the only safe place in the game.
