Cookie Clicker isn't taking up enough of my idle time, so I've been playing Speed Warp since I saw Candy Box creator aniwey's tweet about it. Tom Medley's Speed Warp is a game of idle play, gradual discovery, interlocking systems, and ASCII graphics. If you've played Candy Box (Medley's direct inspiration) and that game's descendant, A Dark Room, then you'll be treading familiar ground. But Speed Warp is a satisfying and consistently surprising experience due to plenty of new twists, gameplay refinements, and a lot more real-time play.
When you begin Speed Warp, all you see is a timer counting up from 0. After 20 seconds, you'll get the ability to enter warp speed. For now, this is useful to you because, after a certain period of time, you'll be granted a coin and access to your first location: an arcade machine. This is your doorway to adventure, crafting, resource management, and more. Coins are your first and most basic resource, and you'll be able to increase their rate of production. Other resources must be made or attained during interactions with the arcade machine.
I hope that's enough to whet your appetite. One of the primary pleasures of Speed Warp (and games like it) is the joy of discovery. It's all about unlocking new ways to interact and learning how the different elements all fit together. While perhaps not quite as epic as its antecedents, this game is a fantastic addition to a budding genre. You can play Speed Warp in your browser.
