Judging a game by an early trailer and the developer's descriptions isn't a particularly wise thing to do. With that in mind, let me just say that Space Engineers really does look and sound properly promising. And no, it's not just the alpha footage posted above which does look lovely. It's its description as "a sandbox game about engineering, construction and maintenance of space works".
Provided things go well, players will be able to build space-ships and space-stations of all sorts of sizes and configurations, pilot civilian and military vehicles and, as is traditional in space sims, mine asteroids. The game will also utilize a realistic volumetric-based physics engine, which will allow all objects to be assembled, disassembled, damaged and destroyed.
Space Engineers will be available on Steam Early Access on October 23, 2013.
