Jack King-Spooner has given us many mind-melting games for free, and for his birthday he's decided to treat himself and us with his first commercial release, Sluggish Morss: Ad Infinitum. From Will You Ever Return? to Inventor, to his part in the dev-chain-game Experiment 12, Jack has made his mark on the indie scene with his visually striking and thoughtfully written pieces, and Sluggish Morss: Ad Infinitum is no different.
Made originally as a perk for his Beeswing Kickstarter campaign, Jack's seizure-inducing (yes, he warns of it) Sluggish Morss: Ad Infinitum plays as an adventure where you don't even have to read the text to enjoy it. "It's a kind of album with a game attached," Jack described in his email to me.
While enjoying the game's soundtrack, you wander around things that resemble space stations and space itself. The text from creatures you encounter adds a layer to interpret what may be a story or what is probably more a collection of the developer's thoughts, but it's moments like this that provoked the most wonder for me, without any words at all:
To celebrate Sluggish Morss: Ad Infinitum's release and Jack's birthday, instead of trying to analyze the game (which pokes at science, big-business, religion, humanity, and life), I will share a couple other images of the moments that stood out for me, just in case the trailer above wasn't enough of a visual onslaught:
