Spiderweb Software has been making indie PC tactical RPGs since the early 1990s. Their list of games is quite long, with Avadon 2: The Corruption as the newest entry and its first few Avernum games as the oldest. Although the Spiderweb Studios is still making new games, they've also been working on remaking their oldest games with upgraded graphics, user interfaces, and additional content. The first Avernum was rereleased as Avernum: Escape from the Pit in 2011, and in Q4 2014 they'll be rereleasing Avernum 2 as Avernum 2: Crystal Souls for Windows and Mac with an iPad version to follow in early 2015.

Those who have played Avernum: Escape from the Pit will already be familiar with the game's setting. In the first game, the player's party members have been exiled to a massive underground cave system, the titular Avernum, by a tyrannical empire. Players and characters both must learn about the society that exists in the harsh underground environment and find direction through exploration and taking on odd jobs. It's a unique setting, with problems like how to feed everyone in a place with no sun light and sentient humanoid creatures who were in the caves before the empire decided to make a trash can of it.

Avernum 2: Crystal Souls will take up where the first game left off, though it's designed to be a standalone game that doesn't require players to have played the first to understand what's going on. When the sequel begins, the surface empire has invaded Avernum to take revenge on its denizens for the murder of the empire's leader. Avernum's people need a hero to save them, and that is where the player comes in.

Spiderweb Software specializes in tactical RPGs, and if Avernum 2: Crystal Souls is anything like its predecessor and the Avadon games, it will provide hours of strategic entertainment with varying difficulty levels and well written characters and stories.
