I had some very nice things to say about Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures when it came out a couple of years ago, and all of those things still stand now that the game is available on the Wii U. Adding in some nice gamepad functionality will make controlling the game a little easier, although none of it is going to be making your life easier as you contend with poo monsters, relentless difficulty, and cameos from every jerk to ever grace the NES' most infamous bad games. At least now you can play it on the console made by the company that put their seal of approval on all those monstrosities years ago.

The gamepad adds a few handy abilities. Now, you can choose which of the poor playable characters you're going to kill by selecting them from a menu that's always open. It will also show you which item you currently have open to use, although don't expect to see much here since you lose those items upon death and you will die constantly. There's a running tally of your deaths, too, in case you're curious how poorly you're playing. I may need one with quadruple digits, personally. All handy stuff that will make your trips to the game over screen that much smoother.

Beyond those things, the same thumb-blistering gameplay is here. Expect Ninja Gaiden-hard platforming, tough bosses you'll need Contra-like reflexes to overcome, music to rival Journey to Silius, and a pile of inside jokes for fans of the show. It's a really great, brutal game I've been looking for another excuse to play. Seeing as my Wii U's gamepad isn't currently broken, I guess it's as good a reason as any to snap the thing in two.

Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures is available from the eShop for $9.99 (and on Steam). For more information on the game and FreakZone Games, you can go to their website or follow them on Facebook and Twitter.
