19. Devil's Tuning Fork

Devil's Tuning Fork is an exploration game viewed from a first-person perspective, where you play as a child trapped in an alternate reality after catching a strange illness and falling into a coma. The unknown world is a dark one and has no illumination, but a tuning fork that you find at the start of your adventure can be used to feel your way around the maze of rooms and platforms.

"The DePaul Game Elites, a group of game development and animation students at DePaul University in Chicago, were given a two-fold mission by Alex Seropian, vice president of creative at Disney Interactive Studios, who also serves as the school's Designer in Residence. The first goal was to experience the game development life cycle by actually producing a game from scratch. The second mandate was to create a ground-breaking title that could be submitted to - and win -- the Independent Game Festival Student Showcase at the 2010 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.

The challenge of competing in the IGF pushed the team to think about new ways to play games. In the concept stage, we hit upon the idea of exploring 3D space via echolocation (sound waves), rather than normal sight. Prototyping proved that this gameplay mechanic was more than exciting; it thrilled everyone who got to play early builds of the game.

We experimented with, developed and polished this concept over the next five months. Along the way, the team learned an extraordinary amount about what it takes to make a game, from working as a team to managing Quality Assurance (QA). In that respect goal number one was achieved as well." - Matt Lazar, DGE Producer
