Austin Wintory Interview: The Gentleman's Private Collection

Andy Schatz and Austin Wintory presenting on the music of Monaco at GDC

Austin Wintory, whose score for ThatGameCompany's Journey was nominated earlier this year for a Grammy Award, is among the most prolific composers working in independently developed games today. His swinging big band sounds for Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded and orchestral pieces for The Banner Saga were both realized through the support of Kickstarter funding campaigns run by game industry veterans.

The Perfect Woman is one who can adjust to the Kinect's bad interface

May 2, 2013 1:53 PM | John Polson

UCLA student game project Perfect Woman uses the awkward behaviors the Kinect can track to force players to mimic life choices starting from the womb. As Perfect Woman progresses, players make decisions that can make their simulated life difficult as they get older. The game aims to poke at the ideals media perpetuates, with particular inspiration drawn from questionnaires written in women's magazines.

Here, creators Robot Bear/Peter Lu (Animal Golf, Burn & Turn) and Lea Schönfelder (Ute, Ulitsa Dimitrova) discussed their inspiration, the limitations of the Kinect, and the game itself.

Four perspectives on personal games

The personal games movement is providing an important, exciting new avenue for expression and a new understanding of design, many believe. At the Different Games conference in New York this weekend, four panelists presented on the theme of personal game-making and why it matters to them.

Kickstarter: Stonehearth, gorgeous sandbox strategy that also appeals to D&D fans

April 30, 2013 12:52 PM | John Polson

Tom Cannon, EVO fighting game tournament co-founder, emailed us to talk about his and his brother's passion project, which turns out is not a fighting game. Instead Stonehearth on Kickstarter is a combination of their love of complex simulations with the 16-bit feel of RPGs, wrapped in a sandbox strategy game with town building, crafting, and battles. The game initially will ship on Windows around September 2014, and is available at the $15 tier.

Game Dev Tycoon fights piracy with piracy

April 30, 2013 9:00 AM | Staff

Game-Dev-Tycoon-tile-wide-150x150.pngCounter-piracy measures can be a bone of contention among developers and publishers big and small. But indie studio Greenheart Games has come up with an inspired solution to bite back at pirates.

When Greenheart Games discovered that more than 90% of its players for its game development sim, Game Dev Tycoon, came by the title illegally, Greenheart responded by seeding its own cracked copy, with a not-so-subtle modification to its code.

"Initially we thought about telling them their copy is an illegal copy," Greenheart's Patrick Klug says. "But instead we didn't want to pass up the unique opportunity of holding a mirror in front of them and showing them what piracy can do to game developers."

November's GDC Next open for talk submissions

April 29, 2013 3:07 PM | John Polson

GDC Next.pngUBM Tech is announcing a call to present lectures, roundtables and panels at the inaugural Game Developers Conference Next (GDC Next) - with submissions open from now through Wednesday, May 29th.

Those who submit talks are being asked to present best practices across six tracks: Independent Games, The Future of Gaming, Next Generation Game Platforms, Free-to-Play & New Business Models, Smartphone and & Tablet Games, and Cloud Gaming.

GDC Next, which aims to highlight the 'state of the art' for the future of video games, is taking place simultaneously with the App Developers Conference on November 5th-7th, 2013 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Vlambeer's games popular among players, cloners alike

April 23, 2013 12:01 AM | Staff

luftrauserssmall.jpgVlambeer's not only known for tight and focused games like Super Crate Box and Ridiculous Fishing. The Dutch independent game studio is also known for taking a stance against game cloning, which is all-too-common on mobile app stores.

The reason Vlambeer is so publicly anti-cloning is because Ridiculous Fishing spawned a clone, which released well before the actual Ridiculous Fishing, and that nearly tore the studio apart a couple years ago.

Now it appears that another one of Vlambeer's upcoming distinctively-styled games, Luftrausers, has been cloned and released on mobile.

Vlambeer's Rami Ismail told Gamasutra over instant messenger that the studio has emailed both Apple and Google about game, which is credited to one "RubiqLab."

"The basic consensus seems to be since [RubiqLab is] using our assets and using fake screenshots exactly like our game that we should just file a complaint," he said.

Mayhem Triple: An indie's own personal Duke Nukem Forever

April 19, 2013 2:38 AM | Staff

mayhem triple small.jpg[Written by Mike Rose]

You've probably never heard of Dustin Gunn, or at least you'll only have a vague recollection of seeing his name mentioned somewhere.

The indie developer likes to keep himself to himself, although he's been actively involved as part of the deeper indie community for quite some time now. You may perhaps remember his last game Sombreros, or quite possibly the Indie Gaming Bingo blog he used to run.

Now Gunn has released a new game, and it's a bit of a special one for the dev -- at 10 years in the making, it's kind of been his own personal analogy to Duke Nukem Forever.

Mayhem Triple is a 2D platformer that plays off the idea of movie-like set-pieces and fast gunplay, with plenty of diving, wall-jumps and overly violent bunny-killing.

"It took a ridiculous amount of time, probably mainly because it came at a period where I was rapidly increasing in skill," Dunn tells me, "so I kept replacing parts of it for years."

The final design for the game was actually settled on around five years ago, but it was Dunn's decision to use Clickteam's Multimedia Fusion tools that turned out to be his undoing.

Black Annex: A QBasic game for the 21st century

April 18, 2013 3:10 PM | Staff

[Written by Mike Rose]

Black Annex is a nifty-looking stealth strategy game from Lance McDonald of Australian indie studio Man Fight Dragon. What really makes the game stand out is that it has been written entirely in the decades-old QBasic programming language.

"When I was like 10 years old I sent a floppy disk to Epic MegaGames [former name for Gears of War studio Epic Games] featuring a game I made in QBasic and they never wrote back to me," says McDonald. "Well, who's laughing now?"
