The first Bleed was a challenging gem of an action game from the XBIG era, mixing fast-paced platforming with the screenfuls of bullets usually reserved for the most relentless shmups. Slow motion, triple aerial dashes, and balletic gunplay let you weave through the incoming hailstorms of bullets and lay waste to enemies on a quest to become the ultimate hero.

Four years later, Bleed 2 will be bringing even more chaos to its unique brand of bullet hell platforming on PC, Mac, and Linux.

Bullet hell games often fill the screen with spectacle and chaos, your ship nearly overwhelmed in the sheer color and amount of incoming projectiles. Flatshot aims for something different, stripping down the bullet hell action to minimalist boss rushes with simple controls. That doesn't mean developer Rosalila Studio is making an easy game, but quite the opposite. From minimal simplicity comes laser-focused tests of evasion and combat, where tense risks are key to faster victories.

Taking place 106 years after an unexplained event called the First Visitation, society has been rebuilt around preparing for a Second Visitation. Trains are the links between towns that keep things running. The player takes on the role of a train driver as things start to fall apart, looking for survivors, keeping them alive, and trying to fulfill a mission that may be of vital importance to the survival of humanity.

Developed by only two people, Sven Olsen and artist Jim Francis, the game started out as a labor of love and evolved from there, with its colorful comic book style being probably its most striking element.

Celebrating Roguelikes in San Francisco

A group of developers and enthusiasts have grouped together in San Francisco to hold a Roguelike Celebration on September 17th. With an exciting group of speakers including the original developers of Rogue (Glenn Wichman, Ken Arnold & Michael Toy), and Dwarf Fortress (Zach and Tarn Adams), and limited exhibition space, tickets to the event at the Eventbrite office will be on sale only until September 1st. Organizer Noah Swartz shared some more information about the event and the club that's helped to form it.

"A veteran shared a story about how killing enemy soldiers is sometimes more frightening than the thought of getting killed - realizing your enemy is not an inferior being, but a person who's serving the same purpose as you."

Many games explore the life of a soldier through action and gunplay. Camila Gormaz, creator of modern military RPG Long Gone Days, set out to do more than that, focusing on the emotional toll that war has on soldiers. Through the narrative, characters, and unique systems she has created for the game, players can experience the mental effects of being in combat, all designed based on experiences of real veterans.

Lost Castle and the Viability of Chinese Indie Games

lc01.jpgThe People's Republic of China has a higher population than any other nation on the planet. That's a big audience with a proven appetite for video games, but political and economic factors have played into creating a market there which is rife with piracy and dominated by free to play games. However, thanks to Steam gaining support for some Chinese forms of electronic payment last year, change is in the wind. On September first, Chinese indie title Lost Castle will launch out of Early Access. It's already sold 130,000 copies, though, and 100,000 of them have been sold in China.
